Even without gorillas, Rwanda is a stunning destination. Rwanda is called the “Land of a Thousand Hills” because it has many beautiful landscapes. It has stunning Virunga Mountains, lush tropical rainforests, vast savanna grasslands, and scenic water bodies like Lake Kivu, Kagera River, and Lake Ihema.

Rwanda is a naturally gifted destination. It is home to diverse primates like mountain gorillas, common chimpanzees, golden monkeys, and others. Besides primates, Rwanda is also home to the big five game animals – Elephants, Buffaloes, Lions, Leopards, and Rhinos. They live in Akagera National Park.

Mountain gorillas & other primates.

Mountain gorillas are special apes whose numbers are increasing, thanks to efforts to protect them. They live in Volcanoes National Park, which is famous for primate safaris in Rwanda. There are about 1063 mountain gorillas left in the wild, and more than 30% of them are in Rwanda’s Volcanoes NP.

Perfect Wildlife. Rwanda not only has primates but also other animals like elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, and rhinos. They live in kagera national park along with hippos, crocodiles, hyenas, zebras, giraffes, and many bird species.

The Massive Virunga -Volcanoes.

Rwanda is a great place to hike through the Virunga Mountains. Five out of the eight Virunga Volcanoes are in Volcanoes National Park. You can hike or climb mountains like Mount Sabyinyo, Mt. Bisoke, Muhabura, Mt. Karisimbi, and Gahinga volcano.

Golden Monkey Tracking in Volcanoes. Golden monkey tracking is another exciting adventure where you can see golden monkeys up close. This is only possible in Volcanoes National Park, and you need a permit for it.

Incredible Game Safaris. Akagera National Park is the place to go for guided game safaris. You can see animals like leopards, buffaloes, elephants, rhinos, zebras, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, and many birds.

Birding in Rwanda. Rwanda is a paradise for birdwatchers with over 705 bird species, including some endemic ones. You can see birds in parks, lakes, rivers, and forests across the country.

Safari Lodging in Rwanda. There are various lodges in Rwanda for visitors to stay in, ranging from budget to luxury options. Some lodges are located in Akagera NP, Volcanoes NP, Nyungwe Forest NP, and Gishwati-Mukura NP.

Accessibility. Rwanda and its attractions can be reached by air or road. You can fly to Kigali International Airport or drive from neighboring countries. Different parks and destinations have varying driving distances from Kigali.

People/Culture

There are 2 main tribal groups in Rwanda: the Hutu and the Tutsis. The third group, the Twa, is the smallest. The Hutu are farmers, the Tutsis are cattle owners, and the Twa are mainly potters and hunters. Traveling through Rwanda lets you experience village life and learn about its diverse culture.
