Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is the best destination to experience gorilla trekking in Uganda. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is a beauty within mist contrasting with rise of the sun rises and the silence that is only interfered with the beautiful sounds of birds and other primates.

Known to be the Africa’s most ancient rainforests, the trek through Bwindi rainforest affirms its beauty when you catch a glimpse of the premier wildlife that live in this forest.

The park is located in the southwestern part of Uganda where the hillsides are mist-covered and also sheltered by about 400 varied plant species that are ancient and are dated back to over 25,000 years.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is a home to more than half of the endangered Mountain Gorillas. This park covers a total land equivalent to 331 sq km, and supports vegetation, steep landscape, high slippery valleys, drought ridges and thick forest with undergrowth vegetation.

The name of this park  “Bwindi” originated from the dark and impenetrable forest and taking a hike through this gigantic forest will certainly unveil its realisticx beauty and that of its inhabitants

How to Get to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

One can get to this park by either road or air means, the road transport is very scenic and offers wonderful views of the terrain.While traveling with air will get you to the park earlier and less exhausted compared to the long drive on the road.

By Road

The journey takes almost 10hours to reach the park at a distance of 463.7kilometers via Masaka Road from Kampala.

One can get to Bwindi National park  right from Queen Elizabeth National Park to the north of the park. And during rainy season, visitors are required to use a 4WD vehicle for matters of safety.

By Air

A traveler has achoice to fly right from Entebbe or Kampala at Kajjansi airfield from where he or she is taken to the airstrip.

Bwindi  has got three airfields in Kihiihi and Kayonza for accessing the northern areas of Buhoma and Ruhija as well as Nyakabande located in Kisoro  for accessing the southern areas of Nkuringo and Rushaga.

 

Activities in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park


Gorilla trekking:

The park is a habitat to half of the remaining population of the endangered mountain gorillas making Uganda the main Gorilla Safari areas. The park also provides Habitation for over 30 elephants, 120 species of mammals of which 7 are diurnal primates, about 360 bird species, 200 butterfly species, and it also has over 324 tree species of which 10 cannot be found in any other part of Uganda including 23 Albertine Rift Endemics hence making Bwindi forest favourable for Gorilla trekking.

Birding:

Through hiking and trekking within the forest, you will be able to view about 350 bird species for example the Blue-headed sun-bird, short-tailed warbler, Red headed Blue-Bil, White-tailed blue flycatchers, the attractive African Emerald cuckoo and many others .

Gorilla Habituation Experience:

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is the only place where you get to enjoy the gorilla trekking and habituation experience. This activity is one of the most interesting where you accompany researchers and guards in the process of making the Mountain Gorillas accustomed to seeing people and it lasts 4hours

Hiking:

Hiking through the Bwindi Impenetrable forest National Park is very interesting and as you enjoy the nature walk, you will be accompanied by fantastic views of various beautiful bird species singing in the air, butterflies, the beautiful sceneries of the ever green vegetation and waterfalls within the forest.

Batwa Cultural Encounters:

The communities around this park offers amazing cultural experiences, and you will be able to encounter the amazing cultural activities performed in the local communities of the Batwa and Bakiga local people like the amazing cultural dances and singing which portray their past life in the forest, craft activities, farming skills as well as meeting with the blacksmiths and traditional healer who treats the sick using local herbal medicine from plants.
