The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has temporarily suspended hiking activities to Margherita Peak in Rwenzori Mountains National Park. This precaution follows a comprehensive assessment revealing crevasse formation in the Margherita glacier. Crevasses, cracks in a glacier’s surface due to stress within the ice, can be extremely dangerous. For example, some on Mount Everest are up to 50 meters deep, posing severe risks of fatal falls.

To enhance safety, UWA is considering installing a permanent ladder on the right side of the Margherita glacier.
